Finding a Breeder

And we mean only the great ones.

Great breeders are worth their weight in gold. They will always support you and though sometimes you may have to wait a while, we promise you it will be worth it.

When we were looking for Ellie it was hard to find good information that we felt we could trust. So we’ve designed this page with you in mind, and to be what we wished had been available to us back then.

TO SEE HOW VIZ WHIZZ HELPS yOU, KEEP SCROLLING.

PROVIDING A SAFE WAY FOR FUTURE OWNERS AND GREAT VIZSLA BREEDERS TO CONNECT.

You’re going to fall in love with your puppy, no matter where they come from. But trust us, the experience you have—how your pup behaves, the help you get when things get tough—depends a lot on your breeder. We learned this the hard way.

When we got our first puppy, we didn’t realize how important it was to choose an ethical breeder. There was no health testing on the parents, and the breeder disappeared the moment we left with our puppy. We had to figure out everything ourselves—and it wasn’t always pretty.

After a decade of lessons (some of them pretty tough), one thing is clear: working with responsible breeders who health test their dogs and breed to standard makes all the difference. They put in the work to make sure their puppies are healthy, well-adjusted, and set up for a happy life. If you’re about to bring a puppy home, take it from us—choose a breeder who goes the extra mile. It’s worth it, for both you and your future best friend.

Great Breeders.

Great breeders breed to standard, health test their breeding dogs and do everything they can to better their breeding program. This also means putting Titles on their breeding dogs.

THE REASON THE BREEDS STILL EXIST for us to love.

The Vizsla can be tracked back to the 9th Century, the Weimaraner and GSP appeared in the 18th Century.

As the breed’s popularity soared, so did the number of backyard breeders. Many of them started pairing dogs with little thought for health, temperament, or the breed’s standards. Health tests? Often skipped. Temperament? Not a concern. If problems show up later, these breeders are nowhere to be found—leaving new owners to deal with the consequences. That’s why it’s so important to find responsible breeders who put the dogs’ well-being first.

MAINTAIN HIGH STANDARDS. LITERALLY.

Great breeders know the breeding lines of their puppies. They only breed dogs which meet physical standard and who’s parents had great temperaments. They breed a very small number of litters each year that are well planned.

Great breeders are being outnumbered by the backyard & puppy mill breeders - the only way we can change that, is by not supporting them.

If great breeders didn’t exist, healthy lines in the breeds we love would have disappeared a long time ago.

We believe the more we share about good breeders, the more we can help ensure that future puppy owners make good choices.

DOG HIP X-ray: Ideal Position

In this X-ray, the Hungarian Vizsla's hip is perfectly positioned, showing a snug ball-and-socket fit, with no signs of dislocation or joint issues.

For breeders, making sure breeding dogs have their hips x-rayed before breeding isn’t just best practice—it’s essential. X-rays help spot dogs with hip dysplasia or those likely to pass it on, so breeders can make informed choices and avoid passing the condition to puppies. By screening hips, breeders help protect the health of future generations and build trust with puppy buyers who want happy, healthy dogs.

DOG HIP X-ray: Poorly Developed

The hips of a Vizsla puppy with poorly developed hips. The hip bones do not have a proper socket to sit in. This dog had both hips replaced before it was 2 years old and vet bills were over $8,000... Pause a second, and think about that with your dog.

Hip dysplasia is a common issue in the breed, and if a breeder skips this step, they’re either cutting corners or don’t understand the risks, both of which are red flags. You want a puppy with the best chance at a healthy, active life—not one who’s set up for expensive surgeries or chronic pain. If a breeder won’t prove their breeding dogs have healthy hips, it’s a sign to walk away.

Why we should care about conformation

You don’t need to go to dog shows to care about them. Great breeders attend shows and expert judges award the dogs that meet the AKC breed standard. Over time, and a lot of expense on the breeder’s behalf, the best examples of standard become Champions.

These are the dogs who are bred. This doesn’t mean every puppy from Champion lines are perfect standard, but there is an excellent chance it is healthy and has a great temperament.

Fast velociraptor sporting breeds are not for everyone, and that’s OK.

Owning a Vizsla is basically like living with a small, affectionate velociraptor.

These dogs don’t just have energy—they run on a whole different fuel. If you’re not ready to keep up, they’ll leave you in the dust.
